What's On In The Southern Highlands In September
Here is The Fold's list of must do's for the first month of spring - definitely one of our favourite times of the year in the Highlands.
ALL OF THE PRETTY // Tulip Time 24 SEPT – 7 OCT
Who else is bloomin’ excited for Tulip Time? The popular Bowral tulip festival is back for 2019 with a fresh new look, a fun theme (hello Mary Poppins!) and a whole lot of fabulous events and ways to celebrate all things spring and tulip-y. Check out our rundown here and if you want to know how it all started, have a read of this and meet Ada Corbett (she’s our new fave!).
CELEBRATE THIS // Bundanoon Earth Festival 21 SEPT
Ten years ago, Bundanoon became the first town in the world to ban single use plastic water bottles. To celebrate this milestone and encourage greater awareness of the importance of looking after this big rock we live on, the town is hosting the Bundanoon Earth Festival. There will be over 50 stalls and displays as well as speakers and presenters chatting about how to minimise our carbon footprint and encourage sustainable living. There’s also kids’ activities, music, food and more – fun!
SHAKE OFF WINTER // September Shake Up 7 SEPT – 12 OCT
Get psyched for summer with PT2U’s September Shake Up. A fab collab of wellness and fitness experts, this 6 week program is a really cool mix of outdoor fitness classes, martial arts, yoga, nutrition, injury prevention and mindfulness workshops. Such an awesome and holistic concept – sign us up!
WATCH THIS // The Lion The Witch The Wardrobe 13 – 22 SEPT
The awesome Southern Highlands Youth Arts Council are at it again, this time bringing the classic C.S Lewis tale of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to life. These productions are always next level with amazing sets, costumes and of course, incredible talent. Choose from six performances or go to them all!
COOK THIS // Tapas Cooking Demo 18 SEPT
Who loves tapas? We do! It’s all so delicious and easy to pop into your mouth, right? Now you can learn how to create your own at Feast at Berrima’s Tapas Cooking Demonstration. Exec Chef, Anne Holloway will prepare a variety of tasty delights, while chatting away and answering any questions you may have. You can get hands on yourself and (our favourite bit!) devour crab cakes, Spanish meatballs and more once Anne has whipped them all up - Yum!
TREAT YOURSELF TO THIS // The Piano Man 13 SEPT
Super-talented singer and pianist, Scot Finnie is back in Oz and coming to the Highlands, performing at The Stables in September. It’s hard to beat an electric atmosphere, beautiful music, a stunning location and delicious food and wine for a fab night out, right? Bendooley Estate's music and dinner nights at The Stables have fast become super-popular for Highlanders, and this one sounds like it's going to be another gorgeous night. So go on and treat yourself!
RAISE FUNDS AT THIS // Police Ball 27 SEPT
A very special event, PCYC Southern Highlands and Wollondilly are hosting their very first Police Ball. The community will come together to honour Police Remembrance Day and raise funds for PCYC’s local youth programs. Guests can look forward to a fabulous night of entertainment, dancing, fundraising and delicious food at the gorgeous Peppers Craigieburn – such a great cause.
DEVOUR THIS // Spring Lamb & Late Harvest Truffle Dinner at Birch 6 SEPT
What happens when two seasons collide at Moss Vales’ Birch Restaurant? The Spring Lamb & Late Harvest Truffle Dinner is what happens! Local produce will be showcased, always yum and always beautifully presented – is it possible for something to be too pretty to eat and too delicious not to?!
STEP BACK IN TIME // Joadja Historic Town & Distillery Tour 15 SEPT
Once upon a time, Joadja was a bustling mining town. Now, it’s a national heritage site being cared for and conserved by locals and dedicated historians. It’s only open for tours a few times a year and there is one coming up on September 15, so don’t miss it! Chug around the old town on purpose built people movers with a tour guide, and finish the visit with a Joadja Distillery Tour and tasting. Very cool to have this in the Highlands backyard, don’t you think?
TREAD THE BOARDS // Acting Workshop with Noeline Brown 28 SEPT
Wonderful acting icon (and Highlands resident) Noeline Brown, is sharing her fabulous knowledge and expertise at this Highlands Theatre Group acting workshop. You’ll tread the boards yourself, have the opportunity to be critiqued by the fabulous Noeline and get involved in a group discussion on techniques and styles. Only 20 spots though so be quick if you’re keen!
CHANNEL YOUR INNER DANCING QUEEN // Mamma Mia 7 SEPT
Calling all Dancing Queens (and Kings!), The Ten Sopranos are coming back to The Highlands with their fabba-ulous Songs Of ABBA Show! This super talented group will be singing all our faves with the stunning harmonies and powerful vocals they’re so well known for. One show only at the Bowral Bowling Club - Go along, sing along and bop along!
RELAX AT THIS // Zen Oasis Spring Festival 28 SEPT
Zen Oasis is celebrating the warmer weather with a Spring Festival at the end of the month (and another on the October long weekend). Taste delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes (seriously, so fresh and yummy), wander around the gorgeous lake, check out the sculptures on the grounds and get involved in family activities on offer. A lovely way to celebrate spring and get your om on! This place is such a hidden gem.
PEE YOUR PANTS AT THIS // Arj Barker 5 SEPT
Comedy superstar (and adopted Aussie) Arj Barker is coming to Bargo with his We Need To Talk stand-up show. If you love Arj’s dry sense of humour and hilarious observations of the world, head to Bargo Sports Club on September 5 for a laugh and a half.
