OCTOBER LONG WEEKEND MUST DO’S
Planning Your October Long Weekend In The Highlands
Who loves a long weekend? We dooooo! The sun is going to be shining this October long weekend, and the Highlands is cranking with awesome events and plenty to do.
We’ve put together mini-itineraries of what to do each day – from kicking back in the vines, or taste testing all of the deliciousness at the Southern Highlands Food & Wine Festival through to bush walks, a bit of retail therapy and suggestions of where to rehydrate!
FRIDAY // OCTOBER 4
It’s party time! Celebrate the start of the long weekend at The Royal Hotel in Bowral or head down the road to the Impy – they always get a good crowd on a Friday night!
If you fancy kicking off the weekend with a stein or two and some delicious pork knuckle, Oktoberfest is in full swing at The Taphouse in Mossy – prost!
SATURDAY // OCTOBER 5
Head to the southern villages for some retail therapy. Start in Exeter with the gorgeous village markets – they’re celebrating spring with a special October Garden Market which includes some interesting talks and lots of fab plants as well as their regular stallholders.
Exeter is also home to Quintessential Exeter, a beautiful light and bright store with an eclectic and stunning range of women’s clothes, accessories and homewares. And if you like rustling through antique stores for hidden treasure, head across the road to The Village Pump. The Everything Store at Sutton Forest is also worth a visit for unique bits and bobs, and fab finds.
Grab some fresh fruit and veggies at the Sutton Forest Country Store (they sell some seriously next level baklava so buy some of that while you’re there too). And stop for a coffee at the newly opened Sutton Forest Café – we love the vibe of this place and the big communal table.
Once you’re all shopped out, it’s time to kick back at Joadja Estate’s Music in the Vines! Picnic in the vineyard with wood-fired pizza, yummo cheese plates and of course Joadja Estate’s awesome cold climate wines (there’s free tastings – hellllooooo!).
And then there’s the music. We bet super popular local band, Eklypse will get you up for a bit of a boogie – wine, weekends and a wiggle! Sounds pretty good to us.
SUNDAY // OCTOBER 6
The Highlands is bursting with colour right now thanks to Tulip Time and some pretty spectacular gardens. So many fabulous properties opening up their gates to the public. Here's a list of open gardens happening this weekend - create your very own open gardens trail!
The stunning gardens at Retford Park in East Bowral will also be open to the public. Such a gorgeous place for a stroll, you can grab a cuppa or bring your own picnic and spend the afternoon napping and reading under a beautiful shady tree……heaven.
If you’re up for something that involves eating and drinking all of the things, then head to Bradman Oval with a group of friends for the Southern Highlands Food and Wine Festival. A foodie fav and super popular with locals and visitors, the festival showcases our region’s amazing food producers, winemakers, brewers, distillers and of course, super talented chefs! There will be entertainment, live music and a fun, relaxed vibe and our tip? Get your tickets online to avoid the queues.
If you've spent Sunday wandering through stunning gardens or eating all of the deliciousness at the food and wine festival, and you’re keen to celebrate the fact that you don’t have to set the alarm clock for work on Monday, then head to the Burrawang Village Hotel for a Sunday evening sesh. They’ll have the outdoor bar all set up (who wants to walk ALL the way inside on a long weekend??) and giant outdoor games – fun!!
MONDAY // OCTOBER 7
Robbo has got you covered for a chillaxed Monday. Head to The SHAC first – this fabulous creative hub is open all long weekend. We love watching the talented artists at work and having a look at the always changing exhibitions. So many talented locals and such a great community initiative!
Shoppers can get their retail fix at the gorgeous stores dotted along the main street. And be sure to pop into The Cool Room – Country Emporium within the Robertson Cheese Factory. Such a treasure trove of gorgeous, unique items. Homewares, clothes, art, jewellery and stacks more. Pretty much anything you can think of is there!
Then head to The Robertson Public House for some lunch - grab a table on the veranda if you can!
Burn off your pub schnitty with a bushwalk. The Griffith Loop Trail is less than a 10 minutes drive from Robertson and with stunning views to the ocean and gorgeous wildflowers along the 8km track, it’s the perfect way to finish a long weekend in the beautiful Highlands.
