HIGHLANDS CREATIVES // Local Fashion Labels Part 2
Part 2 - HIGHLANDS CREATIVES // Uncover and support local fashion labels
This time we venture to Bundanoon and Bowral to learn more about two local fashion designers and makers who are forging a path in the sustainable fashion industry, stitch by stitch.
Designer & maker: Danielle Hewitt
15 years in the set and costume design industry in Melbourne equipped Danielle with the skills and know-how to make just about anything.
She moved to Bundanoon nearly 3 years ago and was ready to redefine her job in this new setting. Danielle started a dressmaking and alterations business from her home studio in Bundanoon and gained valuable insight into what clothes her clients enjoyed wearing and how they could wear them best, whatever their size or shape.
The Quiet Lion capsule collection launched last November, utilising her knowledge and skills in fashion design and manufacture. The first collection is a linen range that’s cool to wear in Summer and ideal to layer with in the cooler months.
“I had always worked in creative roles, but to someone else’s brief and vision. I have found my own artistic and creative integrity through launching The Quiet Lion and it’s very exciting and satisfying to be designing and making to my own brief,” she said.
Danielle’s designs are generally made-to-order, so people buy with thought and intention. This approach creates less waste and encourages her customers to invest in quality clothing that they can add to their wardrobe, garment by garment.
“The level of support and encouragement locally really gave me the push to launch my own label. In Melbourne I think I would have felt like a little fish in a big ocean, but here in the Southern Highlands people do seem to love to shop local when they can and they nurture and support people’s skills and talents.”
In the next 12 months Danielle intends to grow the label and expand her range. Watch this space, this quiet lion is ready to roar.

Designer & maker: Zoe Georgiou
Following the successful launch of a children’s fashion label, Fabboo, Zoe expanded into women’s fashion.
“I found I was taking so many orders from women, that this part of the business just took over,” she said.
Zoe adopts an organic approach to her designs, utilising a range of hand-selected, high-quality fabrics made from natural fibres, such as silk, merino and linen. “I want my clothing to feel pleasant on the skin, be functional and long lasting. I focus on quality, cut and finish.”
Her intention is to create fashion pieces that become treasured elements of her customer’s wardrobes, timeless pieces that are worn for many years.
“I have such a great following and appreciation for my label in the Southern Highlands. I love it here! I have a shop in Bowral now and it’s very handy to be located between Sydney and Canberra,” she said.
The shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so she can give her undivided attention to sewing her designs to life in her studio.
The future looks bright for Zoe, with her sights set on expansion via new fashion collections and an online shop.
