Things To Do In The Highlands In May

May is one of our favourite months of the year. Crisp mornings, crunchy leaves underfoot, gathering around the fire in the evening snuggled up with a glass of red or a hot toddy and of course, plenty of events in The Highlands to keep us busy and entertained.

Our Event Directory is bursting at the seams with over 160 events, workshops, performances, shows and loads more……check out our May Must Do’s for some event inspo!

SEE THIS // PUNU Living Wood Exhibition at Sturt Gallery
This is quite a special and stunning exhibition of Wood Carvings and Walka Boards, featuring the work of talented wood carvers Billy and Lulu Cooley and Niningka Lewis, and works by local artists Peter Swain and Yirran Miigaydhu Weavers. The exhibition runs for the entire month of May (and into June) so be sure to take the time to see these wonderful pieces of art while they’re here in The Highlands.

GO TO THIS // Tallong Apple Festival
This is such a fun, community event celebrating all things apple! There is simply NO WAY you can be bored at the Tallong Apple Festival. Live music, food and market stalls, wood chopping, sheep shearing, whip cracking, pony rides, reptile display, medieval battles, car and bike displays, art exhibition, a bake-off and (one of our faves!) the pie-eating competition!! And check this out….they are raffling off a new car!! There's a free shuttle bus into the festival as well - you just need to take the Marulan exit (just before weighing station) and follow the signs to the free shuttle bus which will take you to the festival.

WATCH THIS // Company at Mittagong Playhouse
We're excited about what's happening on stage this month at the Mittagong Playhouse. The Pigs Fly Productions musical, COMPANY was made famous on Broadway by Neil Patrick Harris and the legendary Patti LuPone. COMPANY is a romantic comedy about a 35 year old bachelor, his married friends, his three girlfriends and his inability to commit to a steady relationship. There's a stellar cast of local actors (some of whom have performed internationally - wow!) who'll have you rolling in the aisles. Click here for all performance dates and ticketing deets! Oh, and the opening night this Friday May 3 (tickets still available) is a fundraiser for the local branch of Can Assist, supporting local families dealing with cancer. What an amazing way to experience theatre, support local talent and raise funds for an important cause.

If life is a whole lotta hectic right now for you, why don’t you consider signing up for this art therapy meditation workshop? Local art therapist, Linda Burgess guides you through a relaxing meditation that helps you to tap into and gain a better understanding of what is going in your life and within yourself, then using art as the platform for expressing what you see and feel through that process. FIND THIS // Fungi Forage with Wild Food Adventures
Fancy foraging for your own food? Well you can with Wild Food Adventures Fungi Forage on Saturday 11 May and Saturday 18 May. Forage in the forest with a local master forager – yep! EAT THIS // Bertha's Meats
We are loving the new casual eatery in the Biota complex in Bowral. Bertha’s is all about delicious, simple barbecue. All meats are smoked and cooked over Redgum, and there are some great beers on tap. An awesome addition to the fab Highlands foodie scene.
