LOCAL BIZ SPOTLIGHT // Kayla's Place
5 Reasons Why The Fold Loves Kayla's Place
You know when you step into a space and immediately feel joy and your heart opens up? That’s what happened to us when we popped in to meet Kayla Alekna, the creative force behind Kayla’s Place on Bong Bong Street in Bowral.
Here’s why we just fell in love with Kayla and her beautiful shop...
SO MANY FABULOUS PRODUCTS
Kayla has been making candles and selling them online for six years under the brand name Kayla’s Candles. She has also expanded her range with the Miss K brand which includes magnesium spray, bath salts, soap and body scrubs. We love her signature HAPPY TIME Bath Salt – just smelling it makes you happy. Imagine bathing in it! Kayla and her mum, Nikki create everything from scratch – from concept to research, testing and making everything on site.
And Kayla is quite the artist! She makes amazing oil painted vases, using the paint that runs off the vases to create awesome paintings with unique names – our favourite was the painting Kayla called Unicorn Fart! Hilarious. Kayla also sells dream catchers and crystals.
DANCE LIKE NOBODY IS WATCHING
We mentioned the fabulously positive energy in the shop. That comes down to Kayla and her infectious zest for life. The music is pumping and if a song comes on that Kayla likes, the place turns into a mini-disco with Kayla singing along and having a bit of a boogie! There’s no way you can leave the store without a mood shift!
A SPECIAL PLACE FOR A SPECIAL PERSON
Kayla has Down syndrome and has found a real sense of purpose through creating her beautiful products and opening the Bowral store. She is a true entrepreneur running not only this gorgeous retail space, but creating the products, building her brand and also growing her online store so anyone in Australia can get their hands on Kayla’s fab products.
Kayla’s mum, Nikki runs The Sell Block – a super cool store with a huge selection of novelty pop culture gifts and toys and quite the cult following! – which is the shop next door to Kayla’s Place. In any one day, you’ll find Nikki dividing her time between the two stores, sharing her retail experience with Kayla. Go Mum!
AN EXCITING FUTURE
Both Nikki and Kayla are excited about what opportunities their own retail experience can play in paying it forward. The goal is to stock and sell artisan wares created by teenagers and adults with special needs, providing them with entrepreneurial opportunities to build their own brands. Very cool.
Next time you’re in Bowral, head to Kayla’s Place and soak up some of Kayla’s beautiful energy and enthusiasm. Such a wonderful local business and family!
