Valley Summer Series
A fab new fresh experience on the local foodie scene, The Valley Summer Series is three different events held over the summer, both in The Highlands and Kangaroo Valley. The brainchild of dynamic duo Eilish Maloney and Rebecca McKern, the series aimed to bring together fresh local talent in the culinary scene, combined with incredible local musical talents. We were lucky enough to attend the last event of the season. This instalment of the series was held in the heart of Kangaroo Valley, at The Friendly Inn. We were loving the backdrop of the stunning cliffs and dairy country...Australia sure can get it's pretty on.
Five chefs collaborate to create the menu, each incorporating their own signature course. Chefs for this event were Eilish Maloney, Kathryn Macfie, Ben John, Tim West and Alan Krops. All dishes feature a different local ingredient and represent each chef’s style. It was great to be able to watch these courses being prepared off to the side of the dining area and to hear from the chefs before we ate. This experience of eating food that you can see being prepared changes the way diners interact with it. I'm pretty sure it makes it taste better too.
Here is the menu from the evening, just to get you drooling.....yep! Five delicious courses.
First course — Raw kingfish with caramelised mirin dressing, pickled breakfast radishes and pork crackling.
Second course — Moreton bay bug tart with seaweed mousse, lemon emulsion.
Third course — Roasted cauliflower with potato emulsion, green goddess, preserved lemon, crispy onions, toasted sunflower seeds and onion cider jam.
Fourth course — Pot roasted pastriumi beef cheeks with overripe tomato salad, pickled onions and burnt onion purée.
Fifth course — Rosemary honey infused figs, whipped ricotta, fig leg oil and fennel jam
Former Highlands local Lola Scott, was among five of the local musical acts that featured on the evening. Lola has recently released a new single and is making some serious waves in the Sydney music scene. Her incredible voice was the perfect accompaniment for the evening. An abundance of delicious food, drinks flowing and live music has to be the perfect event mix, right?
The wonderful thing about the produce in all the dishes was that nearly everything was sourced locally. One of the stand outs was the fourth course and the amazing tomato salad. The tomatoes were fresh and full of flavour, bringing a beautiful texture to the salad. All drinks on offer were also from local businesses such as Eden Brewery - we have some super talented producers of food, winemakers, brewers and distillers in our region and an event like this showcases their products in such a great way.
The long tables got everyone chatting. It was like a big group of friends sitting down to share a meal. This is becoming a trend in this paddock to plate style dining, and to be perfectly honest, we love it!
