Art Galleries of the Southern Highlands
A List of Fabulous Galleries In The Highlands Showcasing Local Artists.
Soaking up the art and culture of the Southern Highlands at our local galleries is a lovely way to spend a day.
There is a whole lot of creative talent in the Highlands, that’s for sure. And we’re blessed that we have so many fab art galleries, studios and spaces showcasing the work of local (and non-local!) artists. Here’s a list to get you started and inspired!
1 // Sturt Gallery and Studios, Mittagong
Established in 1941, this beautiful space in Mittagong is the oldest craft centre in Australia. There is a stunning gallery and contemporary design shop, beautiful gardens, and a fab café. It’s also home to the renowned Sturt School for Wood, where many super-talented furniture makers and woodworkers have trained. Their latest exhibition, on until mid-September, is called Emergence. It’s been put together by the amazing Artists of the Round Yard. Don’t miss it!
2 // Bowral Art Gallery
Home to the Bowral & District Art Society, a dedicated bunch of art lovers celebrating, teaching, and exhibiting everything art in the Highlands, the Bowral Art Gallery in Short Street is a hive of (socially distant!) activity. They have recently re-opened in August with a very special members exhibition of works created while in lockdown.
3 // The SHAC, Robertson
This awesome hub of creativity opened just last year. We love that you can watch so many designers and artists at work in their studios, catch a fab exhibition or sign up for a workshop. The SHAC (Southern Highlands Artisans Collective) is a not-for-profit, community focused and a fantastic space to celebrate local talent.
4 // Whitewall Art Projects, Berrima
Local Highlands artist, Thomas Bucich opened this gorgeous contemporary space just a couple of months ago and already there is quite the buzz about it. It features Thomas’s own work as well as personally curated collections of paintings, drawings, photography and a unique collection of Australian Masters limited edition etchings. A stunning space in the historic village of Berrima.
5 // The Birdcage Collective, Mittagong
Well, THIS is fun! Tucked in behind one of our favourite shops in Mitta, Just a Smidge, is this fun and funky gallery called the Birdcage Collective, a collab between local artists Vanessa Stockard and Garth Nichol. It’s quirky and full of surprises (and you can get your fashion fix while you’re there!).
6 // The Milk Factory Gallery, Bowral
Spacious and light, the Milk Factory Gallery and Exhibition Space on Station Street was established 15 years ago to provide art lovers with a venue to view contemporary artwork and offer a unique space for exhibitors to profile their works. The Gallery Shop is worth a look, as are the many and varied exhibitions they hold throughout the year.
7 // Galerie TETU at the SHAC, Robertson
After 30 years in the fashion industry, owner and curator of this new and fabulous, contemporary space in the SHAC, Stephanie Tetu is exhibiting the works of talented artists alongside her own beautiful pieces. Put a visit to Galerie TETU on your to do list!
8 // The Bay Tree Gallery, Berrima
With a unique mix of artwork and retail items, Baytree in Berrima opened nearly ten years ago to provide an exhibition space for local and regional artists with a particular emphasis on up and coming artists from all art mediums. There is six levels of the most amazing pieces and creations. You won’t leave disappointed (or empty-handed!).
9 // Mental, Bowral
This is such an inspiring space! A new gallery for both established and emerging artists to display their craft, a shopfront, studio space for artists and an events space – it’s got a bit of everything. Owner, Sergei and his team have always got something happening here – from exhibitions to live music sessions on Friday night to fab Mental merch!
