Southern Highlands Christian School
For over thirty years, Southern Highlands Christian School’s core commitment to growing knowledge, character, service and leadership has laid a firm foundation for many young men and women. Their dedicated Christian staff, who value each student as a unique individual, seek to foster these key aspects of education in all our students from Prep to Year 12. At SHCS their vision is to provide a curriculum of academic excellence whilst building a partnership with parents in helping to grow, develop and equip students for their place in the world.
SHCS aims to provide a firm foundation to all years from Preschool to Year 12, providing a diverse and rich mix of learning experiences addressing the academic, spiritual and social needs of each student. Their educational philosophy is based on the teachings of the Bible, focusing on the whole student to maximise their learning experience. NAPLAN and HSC results remain strong at SHCS, with a wide selection of electives, sporting, and extra-curricular activities to complement academic subjects and small class sizes to maximize learning. Electives include Creative and Performing Arts, Technological & Applied Studies and PDHPE, with offerings made in humanities and language. There is also an opportunity for students to undertake external courses.
SHCS desires that all their families feel valued and they seek to build a great sense of community and ownership with them. SHCS is committed to offering high quality, Christ-centered, Bible-based education, providing the students with life-long values, friendship, and opportunities. From humble beginnings, SHCS began with seven students and one teacher and has grown significantly to include preschool, Primary and Secondary facilities. Through this growth, SHCS has continued to be governed by a company comprising of parent and community members to ensure the school continues on the path of providing top-level education and a heart-centered community. The dedicated staff provides a safe and secure environment for students to progress through their schooling years, with an opportunity for them to grow in knowledge, character, service, and leadership. There are also regular community events for the whole school community during the year, including Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Christmas celebrations.
Part of the commitment to the development of the whole child is to help them achieve an outward focus. Students are encouraged to help financially support the school's sponsor children through Compassion Child Sponsorship program, and teams of Secondary students travel to Outback Australia and Vanuatu each year to offer assistance to developing communities. Year 12 student take part in a school-based Community Service program, giving back to the school community and practicing the ethos of being outward focused.
The school is situated on 16 acres in Bowral, and boasts modern facilities, including dedicated drama, music, science and technology spaces, playing fields and a multipurpose hall. There is also a state-of-the-art learning space for Year 5 and 6 students, allowing greater flexibility for educational activities and learning.
